CHRISTY BROWN YOGA

"In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact
of our decisions on the next seven generations."
—Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy

CHRISTY BROWN, E-RYT 500

Teaching yoga since 2000, Christy has studied in India with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (Ashtanga yoga) and S.N. Goenka (Vipassana meditation) and in the U.S. with Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley (Yin Yoga), T.K.V. Desikachar (Viniyoga) and H.H. the Dalai Lama (Tibetan Buddhism), whom she considers her most important teacher.

Emphasizing mindfulness, breath and alignment, Christy draws on yogic, Buddhist and Taoist philosophy, sacred ecology and indigenous wisdom traditions to weave a creatively flowing, invigorating yet calming, centering yet expanding exploration of Self through Asana—dedicated to social and racial justice and highest wellbeing of the Earth and all beings, for the next seven generations and beyond.

All Christy’s offerings qualify for Continuing Ed units for yoga teachers certified with Yoga Alliance.

Christy has a B.A. in Latin American & Iberian Studies from U.C. Santa Barbara and a minor in Global Peace & Securities and speaks Spanish and Portuguese. She also studied Mayan Archeology with Harvard University, spent 2+ years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia working with indigenous basket weavers in her late 20's (intending at that time to become an Anthropologist) and was an exchange student for a year in Brazil when she was in high school.

Prior to the pandemic, Christy taught yoga full-time for 20 years in Marin County, SF and internationally and has led (and co-led) 200-hour Yoga Works teacher trainings, Yin Yoga teacher trainings (of her own curriculum), workshops, music collaborations, festivals (OM Rising) and her favorite: international retreats. She has also been leading and co-leading yoga and meditation retreats annually at Tassajara Mountain Zen Center & Hot Springs since 2011, has volunteered time to guest teach with Prison Yoga Project at San Quentin Prison, is a Yoga Works certified teacher trainer, and has written an unpublished book entitled Yin Yoga & The Art of Letting Go (copies available upon request).

Karen Benke

Author of imaginative books that focus on creative writing for kids & kids at heart

"Christy creates a consistent yoga experience with her calm, abiding presence, a voice that opens one's heart space, and a precise way of communicating the various asanas. She allows students to move deeply inward while helping them to build core strength and explore their edge. She's the real deal--caring and compassionate, magical and wise. She will often share teachings through quotes and poems, setting the mood of the room with candlelight and her gentle healing adjustments."

Writing with Karen Benke

"I first met Christy through a YogaWorks 200-Hour Teacher Training that I attended and she led. She's been an incredible gift to my yoga practice and learning. Practicing with Christy is truly transformative. Her classes and teaching stand out in what seems an ever growing sea of yoga instructors and studios. She possess profound knowledge of the principals of yoga, relationship of the body to the asanas and yogic philosophy. What really inspires me is her warm kindness and keen observance to sense where each student is at and what is needed to bring out the best in you as a practitioner and teacher. During the pandemic, practicing online with Christy was especially therapeutic and valuable and while I thoroughly missed being in person, the livestream experience was still profound. I look forward to her livestream classes every week and feel truly blessed to have her by my side as I continue my own yogic journey. No matter the asanas, a class with Christy will leave you filled with strength, inner peace, stillness and new found awareness. "

I bow to the divine within you and I bow to the divine within myself. Namaste.
