Every year, from November through April, more than 10,000 humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawaiʻi to give birth in its warm waters. The whales can be found throughout the state, but Maui stands out from the other Hawaiian Islands in terms of the number of whales that can be seen, the various ways to see them, and the consistency and regularity with which they can been seen. Peak whale watching season is typically from January to March, when the largest number of whales are present in the waters around Maui.
Maui is the best Hawaiian island for whale watching because the majority of the whales that visit Hawaiʻi end up in the shallow ʻAuʻau Channel that runs between Maui's western shore and the island of Lāna'i.
During this time of year, whales can be seen consistently along the western and southern shores of Maui, with activities such as breaching, tail slapping, and breathing at the surface. On boat tours, it's possible to learn more about the whale migration, listen to their calls underwater via a hydrophone, and get an up close and personal view of their behavior.
Our accommodations for this small retreat is an ocean front, fourth floor, recently remodeled corner condo on Maui's western shore with stunning ocean views overlooking Lāna'i and Moloka'i--chosen specifically for whale watching. The location also happens to be ideal for turtle watching and sunsets! Located just steps away from a semi-private, white sand, swimmable beach, the condo is strategically situated along the 'Au'au and Pailolo Channels where the humpbacks congregate to mate, give birth and nurse their young.
Each full day of the retreat will include morning meditation and afternoon yoga with Christy as well as free time to enjoy the beach below. We'll hike on two of our three full the days through some of the most scenic parts of the island. One of the days will be free for those who would like to join a whale watching boat trip (not included in the retreat price).
Sharing meals will be a special part of this retreat experience! Weather permitting, we'll enjoy delicious and nutritious meals together on our lanai as we watch whales, turtles and sunsets and take in the warm, balmy air, calm breeze and spectacular ocean views. Please be sure to let us know of food preferences and restrictions. We will be happy to accommodate. The menu will be primarily gluten-free and dairy-free while highlighting local, organic produce.
Finally, a visit to the Lahaina area of Maui can support the island's economic recovery after the devastating 2023 fire. Though the area where we'll be staying was not affected by the fire, parts of the commercial district of Lahaina are still under construction. Given the trauma of much of the local population, we will be respectful and sensitive as visitors as we offer our thoughts and prayers to those who have suffered loss.
